Engine repair

Mercedes engine repair, starting with the actual cause.

Misfires, oil leaks, overheating, a rattle on cold starts, or a warning light that keeps coming back. We test before we replace anything, then give you a written quote you can approve line by line.

Symptoms

How urgent is it?

Engines rarely fail without warning. This is how we'd sort the most common signs, from "pull over" to "mention it at the next service".

Level 1

Stop driving and call

A flashing engine light, the red oil pressure warning, the temperature gauge climbing into the red, or steam from under the bonnet. Driving on can turn a repair into a new engine.

Level 2

Book this week

A steady engine light, rough running at idle, hesitation when you accelerate, blue or white smoke, or a burning oil smell after a drive.

Level 3

Mention it at the next service

Oil level dropping slowly between services, a light film of oil on the engine, or a slight rattle for a second or two on a cold start.

Prices

Typical engine jobs and starting prices.

These are starting points for four- and six-cylinder petrol models. Diesels, V8s and AMG engines are priced separately, because the parts and the labour are different.

Every price is confirmed after we have seen the car, and the quote lists each part and each hour on its own line.

What we fix

Common engine faults on Mercedes-Benz cars.

Some faults turn up again and again on certain engines. Knowing them helps, but we still test before we quote, because two cars with the same symptom often need different parts.

  • Misfires and rough runningWorn spark plugs, a failing ignition coil or a leaking injector are the usual causes. We read the misfire counters per cylinder and swap-test before replacing anything.
  • Oil leaksValve cover gaskets, oil filter housing gaskets and the camshaft adjuster seals are frequent leak points. We clean the engine, find the source, and check it again after the repair.
  • Oil in the wiringOn several four-cylinder engines, oil can creep from the camshaft adjuster magnets along the wiring towards the engine control unit. Catching it early saves a much bigger repair.
  • Timing chain noiseA rattle for a second or two on a cold start can point to a stretched chain or a weak tensioner. We measure it with live data before recommending a chain set.
  • Overheating and coolant lossThermostats, water pumps and plastic coolant pipes wear faster in Dubai heat. We pressure-test the system to find leaks you can't see.
  • Vibration at idleEngine mounts are filled with fluid and they sag with age. You feel it as vibration through the seat and steering at a standstill.
  • Breather and vacuum leaksCracked crankcase breather hoses let in unmetered air and cause rough idle and lean-running fault codes. A smoke test finds them quickly.
  • Loss of power on turbo enginesSplit boost hoses, sticking wastegates and sensor faults all cut power. We check boost pressure against the specification on a road test.
  • Engine rebuild or replacementWhen compression is lost or the block is damaged, we put the options side by side: rebuild, reconditioned unit or replacement, each with cost, time and what is and is not covered.
  • Oil leak repairValve cover, oil filter housing, sump and camshaft adjuster seals. We clean the area, find the true source with dye or a pressure check, and re-check after the repair.
  • Cooling system and coolant leaksRadiators, water pumps, thermostats and plastic coolant pipes wear fast in Dubai heat. If you smell coolant after a drive or the gauge climbs in traffic, we pressure-test the system to find the leak.

Repair, rebuild or replace

When the damage is serious, you get the options side by side.

If an engine has lost compression, run without oil or overheated badly, the honest answer is sometimes not a simple repair. In that case we explain the three routes: repairing the damaged part, rebuilding the engine, or fitting a replacement unit.

You get the cost of each, how long it takes, and what warranty comes with it, in writing. On an older car, we'll also tell you if the repair costs more than the car is worth.

We'd rather lose a big job than talk you into one that doesn't make sense.

How an engine job runs

From first call to the road test.

  1. You describe the problem. A video of the noise, or a photo of the warning light, helps.
  2. We run the diagnostic check: scan, live data, and a smoke, pressure or compression test if needed.
  3. You get a written quote with the cause, the parts and the labour.
  4. We repair the car once you approve, and keep the old parts for you to see.
  5. We road test the car and clear the fault memory, then check it again before handover.

Related work

Engine problems often start somewhere else.

A weak battery can throw engine fault codes. A slipping gearbox can feel like an engine that's lost power. A blocked air filter can make a healthy engine run badly. That's why every engine job starts with a full check, not just the engine.

Questions

Engine repair questions.

All Mercedes services

My engine light is on but the car drives fine. Can I wait?

If the light is steady and the car feels normal, it's usually safe to drive to the workshop, but book it soon. If the light is flashing, stop driving: that usually means a misfire that can damage the catalytic converter.

How much does a Mercedes engine repair cost?

It depends entirely on the cause. A misfire can be one ignition coil or a set of injectors. That's why we diagnose first and then give you a written quote. The table above shows starting prices for common jobs.

Can you fix an oil leak without removing the engine?

Most leaks, yes: valve cover, oil filter housing, sump and many seals are repaired with the engine in place. A few, like the rear crankshaft seal, need the gearbox removed, and we tell you that before you approve anything.

Should I rebuild or replace the engine?

It depends on the damage, the car's age and value, and how long you plan to keep it. We give you both options with costs and timings, and our honest view of which makes sense.

Do you use genuine Mercedes-Benz parts for engine work?

For sensors, timing components and anything where quality varies, we recommend genuine or original-supplier parts. For gaskets and seals, quality OEM parts are usually equal to genuine at a lower price. The quote names every brand.

How long will the car be with you?

Ignition and most leak repairs are often done within a day or two. Timing chains and major repairs take longer, mostly depending on parts. You get an expected time with the quote.

I can smell coolant after driving. What should I do?

A sweet smell or a level that keeps dropping means coolant is escaping, often from a hose, the water pump or the radiator. Top up only when the engine is cold, avoid long drives, and book a pressure test before it overheats.
